I've decided to post smaller snippets of my Minecraft shenanigans onto Tumblr. This should be more manageable (i.e. more likely to happen), and I'm hoping I can get a larger audience.<br />
<br />
So, come and <a href="http://burntcustard.tumblr.com/" target="_blank">visit me on Tumblr</a>, where I post cool Minecraft stuff, and pictures of my horses, like this one:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://25.media.tumblr.com/7d8b677cb5d246a3cf74a54e447a80f4/tumblr_mpob34rz2F1stt4i2o1_1280.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://25.media.tumblr.com/7d8b677cb5d246a3cf74a54e447a80f4/tumblr_mpob34rz2F1stt4i2o1_1280.jpg" width="285" /></a></div>
<br />burntcustardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09290061830818210703noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2060549409092911863.post-29818749003775992682013-05-02T19:28:00.002+01:002013-05-02T19:28:49.038+01:00Burntcustard's Log - Entry 2 - High-tech XP farm and extended basementThe last log ended with a view down to my "extended basement". After walking down a long staircase, you come to a large room:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vof6m8qRdAo/UYEpewNWY-I/AAAAAAAAAWY/aH8sIR5yzzY/s1600/Extended+basement+overview.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vof6m8qRdAo/UYEpewNWY-I/AAAAAAAAAWY/aH8sIR5yzzY/s400/Extended+basement+overview.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<span id="goog_907347318"></span><span id="goog_907347319"></span>It's not that pretty, but it works.. as a room. Left-to-right: Skeleton xp farm, redstone/mechanical/sorting room, store room, staircase to the little building outside the front of the house, a few holes, the mine, enchanting room (behind the sword).<br />
<br />
The skeleton-dungeon-farm-xp-grinder is the most interesting thing down here, so lets have a look at that:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQv3Yr2VzE2RaSD1QfC8aD8_gKKt-2zO1wZ8tVT4n6qO30owt1oRuYBXAL44qvF2id2U7Iw78VBjGPDUcU9_S4bnX7_y2VSONXkJPIzRYfmFesppGuANBDpeZvZDpCmHYtpvwPMw5O9D0h/s1600/Skelly+farm+overview.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQv3Yr2VzE2RaSD1QfC8aD8_gKKt-2zO1wZ8tVT4n6qO30owt1oRuYBXAL44qvF2id2U7Iw78VBjGPDUcU9_S4bnX7_y2VSONXkJPIzRYfmFesppGuANBDpeZvZDpCmHYtpvwPMw5O9D0h/s400/Skelly+farm+overview.png" width="400" /></a></div>
On the left is the viewing hatch, then in the centre is the control panel and fully-unfunctional binary mob counter. I figured the counter could only count to 63, and to get to a decent level you needed more than 63 skeletons, so I never really started the workings behind it. Using the levers and button on the control panel allows you to open the hatch, and toggle the water and lights on and off, as shown in this gif:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-C3AUB19S_jU/UYEphhhYp4I/AAAAAAAAAWs/XCIfoChLItM/s1600/Skelly+spawning+area.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-C3AUB19S_jU/UYEphhhYp4I/AAAAAAAAAWs/XCIfoChLItM/s400/Skelly+spawning+area.gif" width="400" /></a></div>
That system is really useful for doing additional work or testing in and around the spawning room. You can just about see the elevation chamber at the back there, which scoops up the skeletons, sends them high up, over the top, then they fall down over....<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWuN9GJFFaxSdl58Mysv59Zom4YkpwZu-W0l9vHHtylaJh6YFJkgsjpsPrA7-8DOB1790ttmX6h1ej-uXBB-reSpxKSSkp1dfG1M0-Wcj7l0Ni2PWEfjLPOsaI2jUKmb7aO9wsJ98Hom2y/s1600/Skelly+farm+punching+area.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWuN9GJFFaxSdl58Mysv59Zom4YkpwZu-W0l9vHHtylaJh6YFJkgsjpsPrA7-8DOB1790ttmX6h1ej-uXBB-reSpxKSSkp1dfG1M0-Wcj7l0Ni2PWEfjLPOsaI2jUKmb7aO9wsJ98Hom2y/s400/Skelly+farm+punching+area.png" width="400" /></a></div>
Here! Left lever: Auto-burninate (kills any skeleton unlucky enough to be in the tiny tube - uses lava). Right lever: Item collection. Yep, that's what the dark line below the skeletons is; a hopper! You sit in the room and wait for skeletons (If I want to get to level 30 I'll AFK for an hour or so), lean in, punch the skeletons and get 1-hit-kills (or use healing potions to KILL THEM ALL at once), receive xp, and the items get automagically sorted into separate chests in the store room. Very Nice.<br />
<br />
The sorting room:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rYAV0lIgUog/UYEpfLrrliI/AAAAAAAAAWQ/qJrvlCPFAH8/s1600/Machinery+room+sorting.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rYAV0lIgUog/UYEpfLrrliI/AAAAAAAAAWQ/qJrvlCPFAH8/s400/Machinery+room+sorting.png" width="400" /></a></div>
The store room:<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dASZ-RMmhWQ/UYEpmPscJ8I/AAAAAAAAAXo/l_JCDM_DHqQ/s1600/Store+room+overview.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="179" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dASZ-RMmhWQ/UYEpmPscJ8I/AAAAAAAAAXo/l_JCDM_DHqQ/s320/Store+room+overview.png" width="320" /></a>
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gsJqLmgMHD0/UYEplIGnd3I/AAAAAAAAAXY/hEFYYT69ws4/s1600/Store+room+lower+floor.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="179" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gsJqLmgMHD0/UYEplIGnd3I/AAAAAAAAAXY/hEFYYT69ws4/s320/Store+room+lower+floor.png" width="320" /></a>
<br />
<br />
Some of the loot:
<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-p6zev0bbhLE/UYEpjvTjavI/AAAAAAAAAXA/vdWbSaQ4p_o/s1600/Store+room+bones.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="179" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-p6zev0bbhLE/UYEpjvTjavI/AAAAAAAAAXA/vdWbSaQ4p_o/s320/Store+room+bones.png" width="320" /></a>
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-W8vcF2eOFHk/UYEpjt83bUI/AAAAAAAAAXQ/wKFiMW6kjXA/s1600/Store+room+decent+loot+v2.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="179" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-W8vcF2eOFHk/UYEpjt83bUI/AAAAAAAAAXQ/wKFiMW6kjXA/s320/Store+room+decent+loot+v2.png" width="320" /></a>
<br />
As you can see, I've got a metric shit ton of loot from the spawner. You might think I'll never use all that, but:<br />
<ul>
<li>The bones are useful for growing plants.</li>
<li>The arrows are useful for shooting stuff.</li>
<li>The bows are good for making dispensers out of and crafting my Power V, Punch I, Flame I insta-kill bows.</li>
<li>The armour is good for free special enchantments like Respiration III (for clay hunting), and feather falling (for building tall structures).</li>
<li>Who doesn't like free stuff?</li>
</ul>
<b>I will write a tutorial on how to make high tech xp farms like this one in my next blog post.</b><br />
<br />
My mine:<b> </b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Fn1UhAZZhZQ/UYKKM6OOToI/AAAAAAAAAaI/XSVpJA14mFE/s1600/Start+house+mine.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Fn1UhAZZhZQ/UYKKM6OOToI/AAAAAAAAAaI/XSVpJA14mFE/s400/Start+house+mine.png" width="400" /></a></div>
It's on layer 11 and there's 3 blocks in between each branch. I've got loads of diamonds from it :)<br />
<br />
Enchanting room:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQH1sMDAXJmSVKQ0PKumlTXQYLHoT7G20L-7PqOXzgBchPBTEGfCpw4vIvtpWliIZEdAqisomCIEdWtEolFC_UBKujjdGQzp8nWdnLYvZONKmPe6Bsfs9J9FcBmHp0lbaXkdKc20W_fBcm/s1600/Enchanting+room.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQH1sMDAXJmSVKQ0PKumlTXQYLHoT7G20L-7PqOXzgBchPBTEGfCpw4vIvtpWliIZEdAqisomCIEdWtEolFC_UBKujjdGQzp8nWdnLYvZONKmPe6Bsfs9J9FcBmHp0lbaXkdKc20W_fBcm/s400/Enchanting+room.png" width="400" /></a></div>
Yep, this place is a mess. I'm not even sure why there's a cauldron in there. The lever is pretty cool though, letting me get just about any level enchantment I want.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-Wqipwb9Hz_I8a5J_9uTJW_s2dd-Z4xM9padYM-rAWQnSkW0ExbezUY6W8SQA3CU0i2NU1z9mmDW_w2kWNBdC8gx2D92r7YsqNhKHUVvx9pbZqPyB_LDTY8txjkimvFCkjC-aUR8rJ3nL/s1600/Enchanting+room+lever.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-Wqipwb9Hz_I8a5J_9uTJW_s2dd-Z4xM9padYM-rAWQnSkW0ExbezUY6W8SQA3CU0i2NU1z9mmDW_w2kWNBdC8gx2D92r7YsqNhKHUVvx9pbZqPyB_LDTY8txjkimvFCkjC-aUR8rJ3nL/s400/Enchanting+room+lever.gif" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This is where exploring my "starting" house comes to an end. Next time I'll show the castle. It will have been worth the wait!<br />
<br />burntcustardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09290061830818210703noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2060549409092911863.post-69066015960750738912013-04-21T14:31:00.000+01:002013-04-25T19:53:34.782+01:00Burntcustard's Log - Entry 1Get it? Log! I use lots of logs in Minecraft!...<br />
<br />
This is the first entry in this series, and I have no idea how long it will last. Hopefully I manage to finish this article! I'm going to try to keep these "in character" and not mention real world stuff. The first few will be in the past, describing the older stuff in the world, and then they should catch up with my castle building. I'm keeping the GUI up in screenshots to give it a more "survival-ey" feel.<br />
<br />
EDIT: This got quite a few views from new people, so I feel like I should introduce myself. I'm Burntcustard, and I like overcomplicated redstone contraptions, fancy houses, and gold hats. I've been playing Minecraft since Alpha, and would like to think I'm pretty good at it. Look at my older blog posts to see some cool stuff I've made in the past.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikceUqSTpm050X1YEduYsDJ40QvrZXdU7bpXExmY9yE4wvNwGVt4uThs1cs3mjMQJ78AlgT05gz3bnywpbSgrV8xfP1LCMzPueh28AFpRCrHjgQj7uNFEhZqcfVM50vPAXfyCunPt6GIxr/s1600/Myself.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikceUqSTpm050X1YEduYsDJ40QvrZXdU7bpXExmY9yE4wvNwGVt4uThs1cs3mjMQJ78AlgT05gz3bnywpbSgrV8xfP1LCMzPueh28AFpRCrHjgQj7uNFEhZqcfVM50vPAXfyCunPt6GIxr/s400/Myself.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Now, about what I'm standing in front of...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fnGgBWWx2Gw/UXPfqb1kFPI/AAAAAAAAAUs/RgAGwZt-cxo/s1600/Start+house+map.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fnGgBWWx2Gw/UXPfqb1kFPI/AAAAAAAAAUs/RgAGwZt-cxo/s400/Start+house+map.png" width="400" /></a></div>
In a brand new world, with Tattysaurus, we started on a hill next to a small lake. For once exactly in the right place to build a house. After deforesting a huge section of land, fishing, and a bit of mining, we built a house. We also found something extremely convenient underground that I'll go into next episode. I then built a very fancy new structure to supply us with enough food to stop us having to spend so much bloody time fishing. Oh and there's a small entrance to the mine. It all ended up something like this:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zyMUSuBdrHg/UXPfp-Ts-XI/AAAAAAAAAUk/7QQO65wPpQ4/s1600/Start+house+front+left.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zyMUSuBdrHg/UXPfp-Ts-XI/AAAAAAAAAUk/7QQO65wPpQ4/s400/Start+house+front+left.png" width="400" /></a> </div>
<span id="goog_1765078483"></span><span id="goog_1765078484"></span>The cows and sheep were collected and bred for the massive project that is going to be the main focus of this series ;)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DFX2Xkp3vak/UXPftom4ApI/AAAAAAAAAVM/AZzxYEgshd0/s1600/Start+house+rear+left.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DFX2Xkp3vak/UXPftom4ApI/AAAAAAAAAVM/AZzxYEgshd0/s400/Start+house+rear+left.png" width="400" /></a></div>
The balcony out the back of the house is for fishing from. It has a redstone lamp in, that with the other redstone lamps in the house, turns on automatically at night.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vF0kBIhKnOU/UXPfnuNFuzI/AAAAAAAAAUI/uxIsD-6tKnY/s1600/Start+house+bedroom.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vF0kBIhKnOU/UXPfnuNFuzI/AAAAAAAAAUI/uxIsD-6tKnY/s400/Start+house+bedroom.png" width="400" /></a></div>
Inside the house is all the standard fittings, chests, beds, etcetera.
The chest you might be able to see in that picture currently has a stack
of diamonds in. Fortune 3 woo!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ugK1hc_tfQo/UXPfrHHLonI/AAAAAAAAAU8/KUXk_fI_Ir0/s1600/Start+house+furnaces.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ugK1hc_tfQo/UXPfrHHLonI/AAAAAAAAAU8/KUXk_fI_Ir0/s400/Start+house+furnaces.png" width="400" /></a></div>
The automatic redstone lamps in this picture were deactivated (redstone torches swapped with normal torches), because they interfered with industrial size furnace setup we had to fit for cooking all the clay for the.. secret... okay the castle. Wearing our swimming hat (Respiration 3, Aqua Affinity) really helped when collecting the clay. There's also a retractable table that had to be broken :(<br />
<br />
So why is the top of the house so wonky? Well, firstly someone put some gravel up there *grumpy face*, and secondly, there's a semi-auto wheat farm up there!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jS-imMBZvXw/UXPfumFMPHI/AAAAAAAAAVc/RhT6SMicjv8/s1600/Start+house+wheat+farm.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jS-imMBZvXw/UXPfumFMPHI/AAAAAAAAAVc/RhT6SMicjv8/s400/Start+house+wheat+farm.png" width="400" /></a></div>
Getting all that to fit was a struggle, but it works pretty well. Press button -> water pushes the crops forward -> press button -> water stops -> pick up and replant. Speaking of food...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Mh85FoP9nNs/UXPfsHZMkbI/AAAAAAAAAVE/W_CR6szDP-A/s1600/Start+house+pumpkin+pie+deposit.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Mh85FoP9nNs/UXPfsHZMkbI/AAAAAAAAAVE/W_CR6szDP-A/s400/Start+house+pumpkin+pie+deposit.png" width="400" /></a></div>
This is the drop-off point for the output of the medium size building to the right of the house. At first it delivered fresh goods every morning. I later changed it to keep the minecart in the house, and collect 32 more of each item when the button pressed and the cart is sent off. An industrial-sized setup like this is currently in development for the castle. The food systems linked to the castle will need to supply food for at least 4 people, so is at least 2 times as big. Lets have a closer look at the building creating the goodies.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CNn-uqYlArk/UXPfnvCqGuI/AAAAAAAAAUM/f-iFwQxEmU8/s1600/Pumpkin+pie+factory+rear.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CNn-uqYlArk/UXPfnvCqGuI/AAAAAAAAAUM/f-iFwQxEmU8/s400/Pumpkin+pie+factory+rear.png" width="400" /></a></div>
This is the pumpkin pie factory! Ignore the hole on the right.. missing sign, missing door, damn monsters. On the left is the daylight sensor, which causes the crops to be harvested once a day.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YFh5x4jA02M/UXPfllVo4bI/AAAAAAAAAT0/KoVSsF0PjtM/s1600/Pumpkin+pie+factory+pumpkins.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YFh5x4jA02M/UXPfllVo4bI/AAAAAAAAAT0/KoVSsF0PjtM/s400/Pumpkin+pie+factory+pumpkins.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLCrgkMIRuRgjrC6-kvtoKp1GOz5QGNSo2-hC2AhFbBV3SRYkI_B1LUOGeR6LFSzC4dpTP4ddyG2pYvyrbP4qTEort1bcKIqsSX1Ko8L1oN5tFLdW9Kx7dHi4wDWjvDTlZ8GiRfZbQ0J8N/s1600/Pumpkin+pie+factory+chickens.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLCrgkMIRuRgjrC6-kvtoKp1GOz5QGNSo2-hC2AhFbBV3SRYkI_B1LUOGeR6LFSzC4dpTP4ddyG2pYvyrbP4qTEort1bcKIqsSX1Ko8L1oN5tFLdW9Kx7dHi4wDWjvDTlZ8GiRfZbQ0J8N/s400/Pumpkin+pie+factory+chickens.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-33xQa4ODS8o/UXPfm5QBohI/AAAAAAAAAT8/g3ZdyxDpBDQ/s1600/Pumpkin+pie+factory+sugar+cane.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-33xQa4ODS8o/UXPfm5QBohI/AAAAAAAAAT8/g3ZdyxDpBDQ/s400/Pumpkin+pie+factory+sugar+cane.png" width="400" /></a></div>
There's no close up of the redstone or chest-feeding point. It's quite simple, but I could give some sort of explanation if requested. I know that nothing in there is very efficient, but it was half done for looks.<br />
<br />
Now back to the house, specifically the basement:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3lxV9CR1oAMvSXp3gT0wtldNlK2s2C22ZjvDdjiTSXYROiopjlHvGkwoa2a3JJxoGS-3E1xJHZkwNgSP_tP6eec1rm7zKLxrpdzfYK5S_kL1rAMHC3-Snr5YLkxnNk5-hI7VldW5m7uqP/s1600/Start+house+nether+portal+anim.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3lxV9CR1oAMvSXp3gT0wtldNlK2s2C22ZjvDdjiTSXYROiopjlHvGkwoa2a3JJxoGS-3E1xJHZkwNgSP_tP6eec1rm7zKLxrpdzfYK5S_kL1rAMHC3-Snr5YLkxnNk5-hI7VldW5m7uqP/s400/Start+house+nether+portal+anim.gif" width="400" /></a></div>
As sign-ed this is the Nether room. The Nether portal is turned off when the doors are closed, to stop the annoying noises and Pigmen coming through (it has happened!). Behind the portal are two dispensers, one with flint and steel, one with a bucket of water. Fiddly redstone timings are used to get them to "fire" at the right times.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Q5ZLxrEhNEo/UXPfpfzz4FI/AAAAAAAAAUc/bfc5JaG1piU/s1600/Start+house+extended+basement+entrance.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Q5ZLxrEhNEo/UXPfpfzz4FI/AAAAAAAAAUc/bfc5JaG1piU/s400/Start+house+extended+basement+entrance.png" width="400" /></a></div>
And down to the extend basement... You'll have to wait until log 2 to hear about the inhumane contraption that's located in the deep down there.<br />
<br />
Here ends part one of the series. Was there too much text, not enough pictures of redstone, not enough dragons? Any feedback is appreciated. I'll leave you with a picture of the sunset from the fishing balcony:<br />

I still play Minecraft, and still have my stuff spreading around the internet with no credit to where it came from (<a href="http://minecraftwallpapers.net/minecraft-castle-close/" target="_blank">grr</a>).<br />
<br />
So... what have I been doing? (That you might care about) I started playing some other games more, like <a href="http://www.naturalselection2.com/" target="_blank">Natural Selection 2</a>, <a href="http://playcobalt.com/" target="_blank">Cobalt</a> (<a href="http://www.cobaltforum.net/topic/566-collection-burntcustards-maps-ctpbodmsur/" target="_blank">which I made maps for</a>), CS:GO, Far Cry 3, Bioshock Infinite, the list goes on. I got back into playing Minecraft in a big way a month ago though, and I'm currently working on... something interesting. Yes, yes it is a castle. No, it is not like any survival-mode-created castle you have ever seen.<br />
<br />
I hope to cover my new creations over the next few weeks. I had hoped to show them in a YouTube series, but the people I play with haven't got reliably decent equipment to allow that to happen, plus, I like pictures. Part one, showing my "starting" base should be coming tomorrow! Until then, here's a picture of a sword I just made for smacking Endermen with:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-X8esJtJnnxA/UXGwThsDubI/AAAAAAAAAS4/2VcokYuKl0g/s1600/Diamond+Deballer.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-X8esJtJnnxA/UXGwThsDubI/AAAAAAAAAS4/2VcokYuKl0g/s400/Diamond+Deballer.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />burntcustardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09290061830818210703noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2060549409092911863.post-40752831011111437652012-05-19T14:59:00.001+01:002012-05-19T15:12:54.167+01:00Showcase - Castle AvarisI actually built this a few months ago on my servers Minecraft 1.0/1.1 map, but only got around to taking pictures of it the other day. It was raining on Minecraft at the time so I cut the empty sky out and put in a nice background by <a href="http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=%C2%A7ion=&q=starry+sky+stock#/d39ljbk" target="_blank">~nighthawk101stock</a>.<br />
<br />
I've never named my creations before so this is a bit new for me - it's
called Castle Avaris, after an ancient Egyptian city. The name means
"Great House" and denotes the "capital of an administrative division of
the land", basically a place where a lot of important stuff happens,
which is particularly suitable as I'm the single server owner. The inhabitants of the ancient city were known to worship the god Set,
who was god of the desert and thunderstorms (along with a lot of other
things depending on whether or not he was liked at the time and place),
which is relevant because the castle takes up half a desert, and while it was being built there were an extortionate amount of thunderstorms.<br />
<br />
The whole structure, including flattening a large section of desert, was completed single handedly on mod-free Minecraft survival hard mode with no cheats - I
sold a lot of enchanted tools, arrows and sand for diamonds, slime balls, etc. to fellow players on the server. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.deviantart.com/download/301986302/castle_avaris_front_by_burntcustard-d4zsm4e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://www.deviantart.com/download/301986302/castle_avaris_front_by_burntcustard-d4zsm4e.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.deviantart.com/download/301986458/castle_avaris_rear_by_burntcustard-d4zsm8q.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://www.deviantart.com/download/301986458/castle_avaris_rear_by_burntcustard-d4zsm8q.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
If anyone want's to know what the buildings are: (In the top, front view picture) In the bottom left is an underground passageway to a skeleton spawner XP/bonemeal/arrow farm, and to my old house. The bottom right structure is a 96-piece wheat farm which is harvested with water at the flick of a switch. The top right building is an animal barn which contains many edible animals, including mooshrooms thanks to Immortalium walking for hours and hours to find some and heard them all the way back. Finally, the huge structure at the top in the middle is my "house", complete with several floors, secret rooms, roof access, and other such fun (but perhaps slightly pointless) attributes.<br />
<br />
I <b>will not</b> be giving a map download for this, as the map was over 780mb and I can't be arsed. I hope you like the castle!burntcustardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09290061830818210703noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2060549409092911863.post-42972726301834378682012-05-15T14:09:00.000+01:002012-05-17T12:35:09.261+01:00New Minecraft 1.2.5 Server Map<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We've started a new map! There are plains, jungles, deserts, swamps, and mountains all near the (now moved for no reason but still okay) spawn point - it's looking like a great one for scenery. This picture was taken just after starting with Hatty and Scotty. Yes I do play the game like that, using <a href="http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/940974-125sonic-ethers-unbelievable-shaders-glsl-shaders-dynamic-shadows-more/">Sonic Ether's Unbelievable Shaders</a> and optifine with loads of tweaks to keep me over 50 FPS. I usually use a seperate low-FPS .jar for screenshots so the shadows are a bit iffy on this one.burntcustardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09290061830818210703noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2060549409092911863.post-29453766335488354712012-05-13T23:17:00.003+01:002012-05-19T14:59:58.464+01:00Still mining and crafting.I haven't posted on this blog in a very long time, so this post is to say I'm still alive and playing Minecraft. I just updated the texture pack page on here, so if anyone reading this still hasn't tried out my cartoon texture pack now would be a great time to do so!<br />
<br />
I haven't been on my server much recently, but hopefully that will change when my exams are over and the next Minecraft update is out :)<br />
<br />
Here's a picture of one of my old houses I still haven't showed off here yet. Im hoping to build a new castle soon so that should be up here too sometime. That may not sound interesting but remember that my last castle (well, last that I put on the interwebs) is <i>still</i> number 3 for google searching "<a href="https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=minecraft+castle&hl=en&prmd=imvns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&biw=1233&bih=672&sei=pjKwT9mOCcnS0QXE_7G_Cw">minecraft castle</a>".<br />

<br />
I highly recommend using <a href="http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/249637-123-optifine-hd-b-fps-boost-hd-textures-aa-af-and-more/page__hl__optifine">optifine</a> as it's been updated too. I'm using the Multi-Core version and Minecraft is now flying. I also recommend not using a toaster to play Minecraft on, but that's for another post. - If anyone wants tips on building computers mostly for Minecraft, mention it, I sort of want to write a massive post about it.<br />
<br />
Now the bukkit team is working with Mojang (well, is part of Mojang), I'm sure bukkit will get even more awesome and make multiplayer mods even easier to use. I'm not yet open to suggestions for mods on the server (i.e no mods), BUT in the future I will look into it. Personally I'm hoping for a fire/ice/explosive arrow mod that doesn't require client installs. Oh and that paint mod.. <br />
<br />
I want sea creatures too. Like this one (from the <a href="http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/446117-110fossil-archeology-v60sspmuti-language/">fossil/archeology mod</a>):<br />

'Tis one of the reasons nothing has been going on here.. that and <a href="http://www.cobaltforum.net/topic/566-collection-burntcustards-maps-dmsur6/">Cobalt wooo</a>.. and college.<br />
<br />
Anyway, I started a new map on the server uhh day before yesterday. It's "half-temporary", because I'll start a new one a short while after Minecraft 1.2 is released (In a few weeks I assume). Just because it's temporary, doesn't mean you shouldn't be nice still.. no stealing, messing up scenery etc etc etc.<br />
<br />
<b>EDIT: </b>As the latest Minecraft snapshot is so buggy, I am doubtful that Minecraft 1.2 will be out any time soon. It's a very substantial update, so I suspect it will also take a while before optifine and bukkit are updated for it. Because of those things, the server will not be updated to Minecraft 1.2 as soon as it is released and current map is actually quite permanent.<br />
<br />
Me Tatty and Anina made a house and it's awesome:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2012/046/f/a/minecraft__larger__town_house_by_burntcustard-d4pt26n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2012/046/f/a/minecraft__larger__town_house_by_burntcustard-d4pt26n.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Iced apple.. Sorry about your house, Tatty burned it down because she wants to do some "filming" around our house, showing off the scenery. I see you've re-built it, you should have asked before making it so close to our in the first place (you might have asked Anina though *shrug*), but everythings fine. Try to make it super-good looking and I'll try to steal Tatty's flint & steel lol.burntcustardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09290061830818210703noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2060549409092911863.post-13805743886917602972011-11-27T18:42:00.000+00:002012-05-19T15:00:48.746+01:00Showcase - My little Minecraft 1.0 HouseMost people on my server probably recognise this house, as it's er.. my house. It's a bit too small for my liking, but now it has a huge maze of basements and secret rooms it's sufficient.<br />
<br />
There are obvious similarities between this and my old snow house, but this one was so much easier to build. Click on the images for bigger versions.<br />

Those that can't connect please email me (burntcustard@gmail.com) or leave a comment. Big thanks to Iced_apple for helping me with the road :)<br />
<br />
<b>Alright, for some reason the spawn point is in the sea. Follow the lampposts to the road, but PLEASE try not to get it blown up. If you can't find the lights, go to x:-64 z:247.</b><br />
<br />
Here's a couple of extra rules and info to do with the big long stone thing:<br />
<ul><li>Don't build lampposts/burning netherrack things/torch shrines all along the road. Sure, have a couple next to your house, but the road doesn't need them.</li>
<li>Don't build underneath the road. I'll eventually organise (hopefully with some help) some sort of transport tunnel right under it, which will also light up the road a bit through the glass holes.</li>
<li>Don't extend the road without permission (I'll probably give it to you, but you have to ask.)</li>
<li>You CAN make your own path leading from the road to your house, wherever it may be. Just don't make your personal road as big as the main one.</li>
<li>Try to fix anything you get exploded!</li>
</ul><b>Useful information about how awesome I am, and how awesome you are not (yet):</b><br />
I know you think your good at Minecraft, but the server is running on <b>hard mode.</b> Do you know what that means? It means if you see a creeper, run for you life. It also means you'll starve TO DEATH if you get too hungry. Here are some tips for not dying every two seconds:<br />
<ul><li>Wear amour. Without this, creepers WILL kill you in ONE hit. </li>
<li>Don't go out at night unless your ready for a fight.</li>
<li>Carry a spare sword in case yours breaks. If you don't want to do this, carry an axe instead, they are pretty good at killing stuff too. </li>
<li>Hold right mouse button to BLOCK with the sword if you see an arrow coming towards you.</li>
<li>Don't jump off high places, even if it doesn't kill you, the zombie behind the closest tree will.</li>
<li>Make a FISHING ROD and a BOW.</li>
<li>Carry a bucket of water when you're near lava.</li>
<li>Eat LOADS of food.</li>
<li>Try to breed animals.</li>
<li>Buy potions, enchanted swords/armour, and arrows when people have them for sale.</li>
<li>Work as a team. PvP is off, it's us against the monsters.</li>
</ul>Hopefully these tips will keep you alive for a bit longer. Good luck!burntcustardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09290061830818210703noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2060549409092911863.post-80198414223483315192011-11-20T18:00:00.001+00:002012-05-20T22:53:53.848+01:00Yay Minecraft 1.0!Minecraft 1.0 is here, and I want to start a new map! The "old" MASSIVE map, is available to download <a href="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/28565393/Minecraft/burntcustards_server_1.8_world.zip">here.</a> <b>The server will be offline until further notice</b>. Hopefully I'll have something organised tonight but the latest it will be back up is tomorrow.<br />
<br />
On the new map, I'm planning to have a very long road. This road will connect as many peoples houses or "bases" as possible, and have a tunnel underneath for safe travel. This might not sound amazing, but I think it will really help bring people together a bit more. If you'd like to extend the road yourself, feel free. Of course you don't have to stay near the road, you could just run off (again) and make whatever you like far away. On that note, I'd like to point out some rules of the new map, which either didn't exist on the prievious one, or that nobody listened to *grumpy face*.<br />
<ul>
<li>No griefing. This includes stealing, burning, you know, nasty stuff.</li>
<li>No flying structures. This includes being supported by 1x1 towers in a corner. If you want to make something tall, give it some big supporting legs so it doesn't look retarded.</li>
<li>If you REALLY want to make a flying structure, like a UFO or balloon, prove to me your amazing at building first, AND build it miles away. </li>
<li>No building near the spawn point (at least 50 blocks) ARGH NETHERACK NO.</li>
<li>No cheating. If want lots of diamonds or whatever easily, don't use a see through texture pack, just go and play creative mode.</li>
<li>Put signs everywhere so we know what belongs to who. </li>
<li>Don't build next to someones house without asking them first. If they're not online use the chat page of this blog and/or leave some signs up on their house. </li>
<li>You can claim spaces by puttings a fence or cobble wall around them, but you can't claim whole ravines or caves. That being said, be considerate, don't mine directly under someones house or in their mines.</li>
</ul>
One more rule, if your going to make a structure out of ONLY cobble, it better be the most beautiful, eye-meltingly good structure ever. Here's a couple I made:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/28565393/Minecraft/my%20house.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="385" src="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/28565393/Minecraft/my%20house.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>Read this too.</b><br />
The "official" currency on the server will be GOLD COINS (nuggets) just like FREAKING MARIO. 9 "coins" makes an ingot, and 9 ingots makes a block. Yes you can change between the 3 with a crafting table. You don't have to use this system, you can trade in sheep if you like, but I'd like to encourage everyone who wants to sell stuff regularly to put their prices in this shiny system. Here's a picture I tried to take of what the currency looks like in my texture pack. Everything kept rolling off the tabe because I have no hand eye coordination and gold is slippery.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/28565393/Minecraft/coins.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="377" src="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/28565393/Minecraft/coins.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>Well done for reading this far, now for the important whitelist-related bit.</b><br />
The server whitelist has gotten rather full, there's about 40 people on it. To make things simple, I'm going to REMOVE EVERYONE FROM IT DUN DUN DUUUUN. However, if you leave a comment here (or contact me by magic banana or other means), stating your in game-name, I'll check it against the current whitelist, and add you again. Simple.<br />
<br />
If you leave a comment saying: "WTF I was removed from the whitelist, what is going on!!!1!", then you won't be added. No offence, but you should read more.<br />
<br />
EDIT: A few people will be left on the whitelist actually, so don't comment here until you've tried to connect AFTER I've made the next blog post which will be shouting about how the server is up again.burntcustardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09290061830818210703noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2060549409092911863.post-4642433946339453652011-10-10T01:00:00.003+01:002011-10-10T22:18:09.813+01:00The Server<span style="font-size: large;">Update:</span><br />
The current "temporary" map, is now our new permanent map! This changed after hearing that Minecraft 1.9 might not be released for a long time :(<br />
<br />
The spawn protection area on this new map is <i>huge</i>, this is to discourage people from dying, and to stop people building near spawn (which I did actually ask everyone not do to before..)<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The old map got corrupted.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">I don't know how, why, if it's Mojangs or Herobrines fault, but it just won't work. If requested I will spend some time making the previous map available for download. I have also upped the number of backups kept for future maps to several days worth rather than just the last couple, in an attempt to stop things like this happening.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;">I have started a new map, which after some discussion, we have decided will be pure survival, just like the last one, with the same "don't steal", "don't build anything ugly", and "don't cheat" rules (which not enough people were following, but I've been polishing my ban-hammer so watch out).</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">This new map will be replaced when Minecraft 1.9 comes out, which should be released <a href="http://twitter.com/#%21/jeb_/status/123077293148082177">sometime near the 18th.</a> This is not an excuse to cheat or do anything stupid, but it could be a reason to not play on the server for a while if your a bit grumpy. Hopefully after 1.9 the map will not have to be changed for.. a long long time.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;">To prove that 1.9 is going to be worth updating the map for, here's a -slightly unrelated- dragon that Notch is making:</span><br />

That being said, some elements of the design can still probably be used to help make other chicken farming machines.<br />
<br />
<b>Are you one of those people, who has eggs, to make chickens, to make eggs, to make chickens?</b><br />
<br />
<b>Yes?!</b> Well then, I have something for you, to help control the amount of eggs you have!<br />
<br />
<b>No?!</b> Well, you might want to become one of those people after seeing what I've made!<br />
<br />
The contraption I have designed takes eggs, and in return gives you feathers and COOKED chicken meat (or edible SMEPU conversion byproduct as Hans Lemurson would say.) <span style="font-size: xx-small;">Please don't call the RSPCA.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/28565393/AECU.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/28565393/AECU.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />

<b><br />
Cooking Conversion</b><br />
The idea of shooting eggs from a dispencer, into the block above a fire, came from AmazedStream and his <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PV1zCpNB7I">video</a> on the subject. Big thanks to him for realizing this. I tried many other ways of immolating chickens, but was unsuccessful creating anything vastly different and any better.<br />
<br />
<b>Why fire?</b><br />
Thermal Conversion Fluid (i.e. lava), kills chickens nearly instantly, and destroys anything that is dropped. Even if you try to drop items through a very thin bit of lava and then into water, they are still destroyed. Fire on the other hand, has the ability to ignite chickens, without doing a huge amount of damage <i>at once</i>. Chickens also try to <i>avoid</i> fire when possible, so the two flaming sections in my design "funnel" the chickens down onto the trapdoor.<br />
<br />
<b>Escapees?</b><br />
Unfortunately, my design is not 100% efficient. A small amount of chickens manage to avoid ignition. I have done a large amount of testing (over 2000 eggs), and I have come to the conclusion that around 2% of chickens escape their firey fate. I'm not sure what causes this mishap, or how to solve it. Personally I don't think it's too much of a big deal, as 2% is such a low amount, and it doesn't cause any malfunctions.<br />
<br />
<b>Dealing with escapees</b><br />
I believe that this sort of animal to meat conversion (but with pigs), may have created Pigmen. Therefore, to avoid the rapid evolution of <b>Zombie Chickenmen</b> - which would undoubtly be far more hostile and cunning than Pigmen - all escapees <b>must</b> be euthanized with ruthless efficiency. There is an access door on the back of my design which allows this to manually take place. I considered adding some sort of lava chicken remover, but I think the design is complex enough already.<br />
<br />
<b>Test results</b><br />
Each test used 576 (an inventory full) of eggs, which if the "1 out of 8 eggs becomes a chicken" theory is to be believed, should be about 72 chickens. All meat is cooked. These results are the same as the ones shown in the video.<br />
<b>Run 1</b><br />
Meat = 88<br />
Feathers = 89<br />
Escapees = 2<br />
<b>Run 2</b><br />
Meat = 74<br />
Feathers = 75<br />
Escapees = 1<br />
<b>Run 3</b><br />
Meat = 73<br />
Feathers = 74<br />
Escapees = 1<br />
<b>Run 4</b><br />
Meat = 75<br />
Feathers = 75<br />
Escapees = 2<br />
<b>Totals</b><br />
Eggs = 2304<br />
Chickens* = 288<br />
Meat = 310<br />
Feathers = 313<br />
Escapees = 6<br />
Escapee%**= 1.94<br />
<br />
*<i>Predicted</i> amount of chickens. Actual chicken count must be higher (310 at least) because each chicken can only drop 1 meat. This may be to do with the fact that -very- rarely, an egg can spawn 4 chickens.<br />
<br />
** Escapee percent is based upon assuming 310 chickens appeared in the trap. Yes, the figure in the video is "wrong"; it uses the number or <i>Predicted</i> chickens rather than number of <i>actual</i> chickens.<br />
<br />
Special thanks goes to Hans Lemurson and <a href="http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/642967-ammunition-shortage">his thread</a> about accumulating arrows.burntcustardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09290061830818210703noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2060549409092911863.post-69863358194510684962011-03-14T16:24:00.002+00:002011-09-14T18:30:45.419+01:00My Old ServerSorry anyone who's been wanting updates to any of this, I started a server a while ago and have been a bit busy!<br />

After climbing over an all-too-familiar hill or two, I get to a big forest. I'm glad those flint and steel maniacs from my server aren't here.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"><b>As far the the eye can see (as far as will render)</b></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194205123/day4_forest_by_burntcustard-d37mhmr.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194205123/day4_forest_by_burntcustard-d37mhmr.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>Yay! Found some mushrooms. I feel like I've got enough food to last me for my whole journey now, as long as nothing jumps on my head (or more likely , me jump on it's head by accident). After walking for a few minutes in the forest, I come across a clearing with cliff face and <strike>water oblong</strike> waterfall.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"><b>Little waterfall</b></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194205200/day4_waterfall_by_burntcustard-d37mhow.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194205200/day4_waterfall_by_burntcustard-d37mhow.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>I don't plan on stopping until I notice a little cave next to the waterfall which I just can't resist exploring.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"><b>Fullscreen this and it'll make more sense</b></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194205276/day4_cave_by_burntcustard-d37mhr0.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194205276/day4_cave_by_burntcustard-d37mhr0.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>Inside I see a couple of rather interesting things, a zombie, and.. <i>cobblestone</i>. You guys should know what this means :D After realizing I've only got 1 torch left, killing the zombie, finding the end of the tunnel, and getting some coal, I'm ready to open up the dungeon. It seems strange how quiet it is, I have no idea what could be in there, maybe it's just lava that's touched some water (I doubt that actually). I carefully mine out of one the cobble blocks and..<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"><b><strike>Stones</strike> Skeletons!</b></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194205328/day_4_skeleton_showdown_by_burntcustard-d37mhsg.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194205328/day_4_skeleton_showdown_by_burntcustard-d37mhsg.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>*TWANGTWANGTWANGTWANGTWANG* The skeletons go berserk all shooting at each other rather than me. I run around madly anyway hoping that If they do shoot they won't hit me. I haven't jumped like that whilst playing Minecraft for a while. I can see at least 3 skeletons die, and the one closest to me turns around and start shooting. I run around some more than go up to him and give him a little poke and he dies. Like either someone who is quite brave (or more likely, quite stupid, you'll find out why in a second). I knock out another block and go into the dungeon.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"><b>Free bones</b></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194205411/day4_after_showdown_by_burntcustard-d37mhur.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194205411/day4_after_showdown_by_burntcustard-d37mhur.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>I hop over all of the "free" arrows and bones, picking them up and filling my inventory completely. When in a dungeon like this, it's best not to destroy the spawner, but surround it with torches so you can make a trap out of it. OH. I'm going to have to make some more torches before.. too late. One last skeleton spawns but I manage to drop what I'm going and hit him in the face several times before he can put too many arrows inside of me. I then stab I and construct a bunch of new torches in record time and run around the spawner placing them on the ground like I'm doing some sort of weird ritual.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"><b>Winnings</b></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194205534/day4_yay_iron_by_burntcustard-d37mhy6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194205534/day4_yay_iron_by_burntcustard-d37mhy6.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>I drop some stuff down that I don't need then have a look at what's in the chest. Ohh lots of iron, that will come in handy. Actually, I might as well take the chest too.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Yoink!</span> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194205585/day4_taking_chest_by_burntcustard-d37mhzl.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194205585/day4_taking_chest_by_burntcustard-d37mhzl.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>I don't know why I was hitting that thing with bacon, it made it taste pretty odd. (The bacon not the chest, I'm not some sort of weird chest-eating-machine. A little nibble might be nice sometimes but anyway...) On my way out I notice something above the entrance, maybe they had been shooting at me after all!<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Arrows</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194205674/day4_exiting_dungeon_by_burntcustard-d37mi22.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194205674/day4_exiting_dungeon_by_burntcustard-d37mi22.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>Having thought I've spent enough time in here, I walk to the cave entrance and notice it's getting dark, I guess I'll stay here tonight then. I board up the entrance with planks and a door, and also put a door on the dungeon, just in case some skeletons come to rape me in my sleep.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Night already, again.</span> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194205787/day4_night_by_burntcustard-d37mi57.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194205787/day4_night_by_burntcustard-d37mi57.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />

<br />
Determined to go far, far away, I set off. First off in my journey, I see a creeper. "Hello Mr Creeper" I say kindly. He seems saddened by something.. he seems quite up for the idea of me chopping him into little pieces, so I comply.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><b>Jumpy jumpy creepy creepy</b> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194090171/day3_creeper_by_burntcustard-d37k0xn.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194090171/day3_creeper_by_burntcustard-d37k0xn.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>After <i>dealing</i> with the creeper, I get over the hill, over some water onto another little hill. I then look back into the water and see some squids! Yay! I then continue to <i>deal </i>with the squids.<br />

Ohh piggies, they look tasty. <br />

Time to continue my journey and go as far as possi... argh night time again, already. And whats that noise? AHH the chicken's back! I decide it's probably best to hide somewhere tonight, as I don't know how many hundreds of monsters there will be. I run to the closest heap of dirt and set up a little shelter in it.<br />

<br />
With my little cave full of the delightful smell of cooked <i>bacon</i> - note that I eat <i>bacon</i>, not <i>porkchop</i> because I am a <i>man </i>- and a scented whiff of smelted iron, I head off into the day with my shiny new killing stick, confident that today I'm going to find a cool place to build by castle. I come across a cliff face which looks very tall, "maybe I'll get a good view from up there" I think to myself. I start to go through an archway and see a... what is that? Is it stone?<br />

<br />
I run back to the beach as quick as my little squarish legs will carry me, to a nice flat spot I want to build my shelter. I haven't got that many materials so I'm forced to build quite a small, building, made up of an assortment of blocks. I'm determined to get it to look better that a square box.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Pretty moon</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194065931/night1_building_by_burntcustard-d37ji8b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194065931/night1_building_by_burntcustard-d37ji8b.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>For some reason I don't take a picture of the completed shelter *shrugs*. Just after finishing it off, I hear a startling growl, up to this point I hadn't seen any monsters in this world, I had absolutely no idea where it was coming from. I got out of my shelter to have a quick look and..<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">What scares me most about this is the chicken and sheep.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194065957/night1_first_monster_by_burntcustard-d37ji91.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194065957/night1_first_monster_by_burntcustard-d37ji91.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>Well this is.. actually not that bad, the zombie isn't running at me or anything, he looks angry though, I would be too if I'd made that much of a mess of my top. The zombie starts to chase me and I run around the shelter a bit before going inside. "I wonder where that chicken has gone" I think to myself, looking through the back window. I turn around and AHH!<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Another zombie!</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194065994/night1_hiding_by_burntcustard-d37jia2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194065994/night1_hiding_by_burntcustard-d37jia2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>Obviously the chicken has called for backup! I knew I should have killed it. That sheep is still scaring me, it looks kind of sad, maybe the zombies are <i>holding it hostage</i>. I decide to open my door, cautiously poking the zombies with my crappy sword. I saved the sheep yay! It's starting to get light now, that was a pretty uneventful night to be honest, barely any monsters.<br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Day 2</span></b> <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Sheep and his friends go for a swim.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194066023/day2_swimming_by_burntcustard-d37jiav.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194066023/day2_swimming_by_burntcustard-d37jiav.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>The sheep and his cow friends go for a swim when I get out of my house. They all look pretty grumpy. Now I needed something to do, some sort of objective. I decide upon getting lots of sandstone, because I want to build a sandstone castle. That sounds cool, and what could possibly be more fun that collecting heaps of sand?..<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Collecting sand</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194066044/day_sand_collecting_by_burntcustard-d37jibg.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194066044/day_sand_collecting_by_burntcustard-d37jibg.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>I start out quite positive with this, but it gets <strike>really</strike> quite boring after a while.. I keep going anyway. Bored of collecting sand, I start to take down my shelter, I don't think it's really necessary due to the apparent lack of danger around here.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Night 2</b></span> <br />
<br />
I dig some more, through the night, then all of a sudden I turn round and there are a couple of zombies chasing me <i>again</i>, and <i>they've already killed the sheep.</i><br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">More zombies!</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194066066/night2_more_zombies_by_burntcustard-d37jic2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194066066/night2_more_zombies_by_burntcustard-d37jic2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>Whilst running, I notice I've uncovered some iron, yay! I have no idea what I'm going to use it on, but I'm sure it will be helpful. After running around a bit and killing the zombies, I get back to sand collecting.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">BOOM!</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194066092/night2_explosion_by_burntcustard-d37jics.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194066092/night2_explosion_by_burntcustard-d37jics.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>WTF?! I didn't see that coming, how on earth did I only lose half a heart? Ah well, free sand. Time to dig some more.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Hole</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194066106/night2_hole_by_burntcustard-d37jid6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194066106/night2_hole_by_burntcustard-d37jid6.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>As the sun starts to rise, I look back on what I've done during the night. I'm still surprised by the lack of monsters, but obviously I don't mind it. Four stacks (64) of sandstone, that should be enough. Now I just need somewhere to build my sand castle.. Time to go exploring!<br />
<br />
Episode 3 coming soon, there will be a lot more pretty pictures in it I promise.burntcustardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09290061830818210703noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2060549409092911863.post-46867568057217389742011-01-18T23:13:00.000+00:002011-01-19T22:09:08.391+00:00Minecraft Diary - Episode 1I've been inspired by Tom Francis' <a href="http://www.pcgamer.com/tag/the-minecraft-experiment/">"Minecraft Experiment" on PC Gamer</a> and my <a href="http://burntcustardsminecraft.blogspot.com/2011/01/my-texture-pack.html">new texture pack</a>, to do a sort of "lets play" with pictures. This will be much more pretty than PC Gamers version (especially if you view the pictures full screen), and I'm hoping the commentary will be just as interesting. <br />
<br />
I'm a lot more experienced than Tom Francis was when he did his Minecraft Experiment (so will act like less of an idiot, lol), and will be playing the same "hardcore mode" that if you die, you delete that map. I am not planning on dying. I don't have an overall objective yet, maybe someone could suggest one? Oh also, each "episode" will be about one day and night, depending on how many pictures I take.<br />
<br />
Everybody knows by now that default Minecraft isn't particularly stunning to look at, although a lot of people enjoy the "style" and/or get used to it. Somehow after a while your brain adapts and you think it is "normal" for the world to be made out of blocks (or maybe I've just been playing for too long). With my new texture pack/mods, my 1920x1200 screen and a tiny bit of image editing, I'll be persuading you that really, Minecraft can look awesome.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Day 1</b></span><br />
<br />
Although I could keep generating new ones until I get some great scenery, I'm just going to stick with the first one I get, turns out it doesn't look too bad.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><b>Spawn</b> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194000304/day1_spawn_by_burntcustard-d37i3lc.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194000304/day1_spawn_by_burntcustard-d37i3lc.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>As you can see, I've got a custom sun, sand, cacti, water, and health bar. These things aren't in the usual squarish Minecraft style, but I think they fit together with everything quite well. "This place looks quite nice" I think to myself as I look around, then I catch something in the corner of my eye. Now any Minecraft survival player with a big screen will tell you how exciting and/or important seeing something out of the corner of your eye can be, this was no exception. I'm pretty sure that pig has seen whatever it is too.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><b>Something in the sea</b> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194000489/day1_something_in_the_sea_by_burntcustard-d37i3qh.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194000489/day1_something_in_the_sea_by_burntcustard-d37i3qh.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>I run towards the water, hoping to get a better look.. but nothing. Quite disappointed, I think about leaving it, but I was <i>sure</i> I saw something. Time for a swim! *Splosh*<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><b>Squids!</b> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194000682/day1_squids_by_burntcustard-d37i3vu.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194000682/day1_squids_by_burntcustard-d37i3vu.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>View this fullscreen and stand up if you can't see them. I was tempted to punch the swimming tarantulas in the face to get some <strike>poo</strike> ink, but they were too deep, I'd drown before half killing one. Maybe I'll come back when I've got a sword. And besides, their eyes were beginning to creep me out.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><b>Scenery</b> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194000878/day1_scenery_by_burntcustard-d37i41a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194000878/day1_scenery_by_burntcustard-d37i41a.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>After nearly hurting myself staring at the squids, getting out then walking around for a minute on the beach, I come across this. Pretty cool cliff right? Having the view distance on full is nice.. I figure out that I'm spending too long prating around and decide I need to get myself some tools.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><b>Supplies - Wood</b> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194001152/day1_supplies_by_burntcustard-d37i48w.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194001152/day1_supplies_by_burntcustard-d37i48w.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>As any experienced Minecraftian knows, you gotta punch trees first. Now I've <i>got wood</i>, I'm going to make a wooden pickaxe, get some stone, then make stone tools. Although you can now make charcoal out of wood, It would still be nice to find some coal before night time too.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><b>Supplies - Coal</b> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194001255/day1_supplies2_by_burntcustard-d37i4br.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194001255/day1_supplies2_by_burntcustard-d37i4br.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>Found <i>loads</i> of coal. Thats good. Made two stone axes by accident. Not really bad, but considerably frustrating for somebody as OCD as me. Click the picture to see the <i>incredibly</i> helpful advise the cow gave me, seriously I know, I was going to get it anyway. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANgI2o_Jinc">Obnoxious cow</a>. You can see in the picture the comparison between the shiny 128x128 "painted" textures, and the default 16x16 workbench. I personally think it all looks nice. *Squeezes in another picture here - this one would make a good desktop background*<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><b>Scenery 2</b> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.deviantart.com/download/193999273/minecraft_cliff_by_burntcustard-d37i2sp.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://www.deviantart.com/download/193999273/minecraft_cliff_by_burntcustard-d37i2sp.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>I get some more wood and start thinking about where I can plonk down a little cabin, but then realise I can't see the sun. "Do I have enough time to make a cabin"? I scramble over a hill to figure out where that white blob in the sky is, and then:<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><b>Sunset</b> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194001393/day1_sunset_by_burntcustard-d37i4fl.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://www.deviantart.com/download/194001393/day1_sunset_by_burntcustard-d37i4fl.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>Well that's quite pretty, I do love how the sun goes orange when it sets. This isn't the best looking Minecraft world I've ever seen, but I think its close. Obviously I've only seen one billionth (or something) of the world so far, so I hope I see some more awesome things again tomorrow... wait a second.. tomorrow! It's nearly night time! No house! No food! I haven't even made any torches yet! I refuse to sit in a hole at night and cry like a petrified worm hiding from the outside world, tonight will be fun.<br />
<br />
More coming soon!burntcustardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09290061830818210703noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2060549409092911863.post-5838232027525401772011-01-17T23:36:00.000+00:002011-02-01T18:04:52.737+00:00My Texture PackI've decided to share my Minecraft texture pack/mods. It requires a half decent computer to pull off, so hold down F3 in Minecraft and if your not getting 60+FPS then this isn't for you.<br />
<br />
<b>*Updates*</b><br />
<br />
- New tree (beta-snowy) leaves now work.<br />
- Snow matches sides without snow on much better.<br />
- Snow "tiles" much better.<br />
- Little fixes around the edges of some blocks.<br />
<br />
<b>This pack contains:</b><br />
<br />
- The pack is mostly the <a href="http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=1021&t=117178">BroPaint</a> texture pack made by Rofrere. It also contains the <a href="http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=46173">HD texture fix</a> by xau, and the awesome <a href="http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=55700">MrMMods (BetterLight/BetterGrass)</a> by MrMessiah. Full credits are included in the pack.<br />
<br />
- Full set of lovely new textures, or the option to keep most of the defaults so only the scenery (and a few other things) look nice, whilst the blocks you craft keep the original "feel" of Minecraft<br />
<br />
- New Sun and Moon from the BroPaint pack, these look great when rising/setting.<br />
- New hearts/health meter from the BroPaint pack.<br />
- Scarier spiders, zombies and ghasts. Also less clean looking sheep.<br />
- New water, unfortunately it's not animated when still, but I think it still looks good.<br />
- Lovely sand and sandstone from <a href="http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=1021&t=97561">Dante80s ALBION 64x Texture pack</a>.<br />
<br />
Does all that sound good? Well it looks even better! <a href="http://www.megaupload.com/?d=NC84NJUM">Get the pack here.</a><br />
<br />
<b>Screenshots </b>(will update with more soon, also pigs don't look this crazy anymore. Click for full screen. Actually click. Especially if you have a 1920x1080 monitor so you can view full size.)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.deviantart.com/download/193684121/cliffside_with_mr_crazypig_by_burntcustard-d37bbmh.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://www.deviantart.com/download/193684121/cliffside_with_mr_crazypig_by_burntcustard-d37bbmh.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<b>Installation Instructions:</b><br />
<br />
- Extract the archive into C:\Users\(your user name)\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft This may be slightly different depending on your operating system. "AppData" is a hidden file, so you will have to enable seeing them if you haven't already.<br />
<br />
- Run mcpatcher (the HD texture fix). <br />
- Set the Original file to \bin\minecraft-1.2_02.jar(correct at time of writing) & Output file to \bin\minecraft.jar<br />
- Set the Texture pack to a .zip file & check the Tile Size has changed to 128x128<br />
- Press Patch and after completion, close the Minecraft Patcher.<br />
- Run MrMPatcher.<br />
- Set Original and Output files like in the other patcher.<br />
- Highlight the Better Light and Better Grass boxes and press Patch.<br />
- After completion, close the patcher and play Minecraft!<br />
<br />
- To switch to the other texture pack included, do exactly the same again but select the other texture pack, it's really that simple!<br />
<br />
- To uninstall everything, delete your C:\Users\(user)\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\bin folder, then start up Minecraft and it will re-download it for you. You will not lose your save files. As you can see these are very safe mods to install.<br />
<br />
I would like to update the pack with a few more things sometime, comments and suggestions are appreciated.burntcustardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09290061830818210703noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2060549409092911863.post-35198100753590850932011-01-16T22:56:00.000+00:002011-01-16T22:56:31.878+00:00Showcase - My Log house and Stone house<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://fc09.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2010/339/b/3/log_house_by_burntcustard-d34acw9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://fc09.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2010/339/b/3/log_house_by_burntcustard-d34acw9.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />

As you can probably tell by those lower pictures, I've started using a new texture pack. It's made out of snow blocks, which unlike snow that has just settled, is resistant to heat. It took over a hundred stone shovels to get all the snowballs to make into the blocks. If you have any questions about this, please revive the Minecraft forum thread.<br />

<b>How come your Minecraft world looks so clear and pretty?</b><br />
Well that would be because I recently downloaded <a href="http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=55700">this brilliant mod</a> and installed the ambient occlusion and bettergrass bits. It is a very simple and safe mod to use, and I <i>highly</i> recommend it.burntcustardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09290061830818210703noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2060549409092911863.post-54069053617650176232010-11-14T17:33:00.000+00:002010-11-26T12:41:17.990+00:00Weapon guide. Part 2 - The bow."Some monsters think they can outsmart me. Maybe. I have yet to find one who can outsmart stack of arrows."<br />
- Burntcustard pretending to be The Heavy<br />
<br />
Part 2 of this guide covers how to use the bow to kill Aggressive mobs (Not including creatures from the Nether) Whilst playing Survival Single Player.<br />
<br />
<b>The Basics</b><br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHZ1kXBDqU71LeoIHv-il_k9Zd4yvhnyEP8-oh8-vi3hkYzjUicQu3SEBNQq4aT1HWTKH5jT8OYtnOCEOcHCGD7BIoWmhxJGqOx2tifgTlkn-oinD-s1OKjQkKHfAcTt1qlrI_Q-oX7Nb5/s1600/CraftingBowIO.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHZ1kXBDqU71LeoIHv-il_k9Zd4yvhnyEP8-oh8-vi3hkYzjUicQu3SEBNQq4aT1HWTKH5jT8OYtnOCEOcHCGD7BIoWmhxJGqOx2tifgTlkn-oinD-s1OKjQkKHfAcTt1qlrI_Q-oX7Nb5/s1600/CraftingBowIO.png" /></a>If you haven't yet used the bow in Minecraft, the easiest way to find out what its like is to just make one and try it. You will also need arrows, these are simply a stick above a feather (obtained from zombies and chickens), and a piece of flint (obtained from shoveling gravel) above the stick, this makes 4 arrows. Arrows travel approximately 15 blocks when fired horizontally and have a maximum range of around 50 blocks when fired at a 45 degree angle, though they will travel farther if the terrain is sloped downwards. The bow has the disadvantage over the sword, crafting wise, that you have to kill mobs to begin with before being able to make it.</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><b>Using just the bow</b></div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The bow needs 5 arrows to kill a monster which is quite a lot of hits/time compared to using just the iron or diamond swords. The bow can also take a quite a lot of resources to use if you miss often (you can pick up shot arrows that missed usually). The bow does not run out of uses and break like swords do, this can be an advantage if you don't have much stone or iron for a long period of time or don't like having to craft new weapons often. The most advantageous point with just using the bow is obviously that you don't have to get close to monsters, where they can hurt you. Unfortunately quite often in Minecraft, you can be "ambushed" by monsters, so they are already close to you and the above point is made slightly less important. Using just arrows is the recommended way to kill skeletons.</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><b>The bow the stone sword</b></div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">2 arrows and 2 sword strikes are needed to kill a monster, and 60% less arrows are needed over using just the bow. The combination of 2 arrows and 2 sword strikes on a mob help to keep you at a safe distance from the monster half the time. This technique doubles the stone swords bad number of kills per item up to a more usable 32.</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><b>The bow and the iron and diamond swords. </b></div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">3 arrows and 1 sword strikes are needed to kill a monster, and 40% less arrows are needed over using just the bow. These combinations are great at killing creepers as it stops you having to run away slightly in between each hit. Using a bow with the iron sword triples the iron swords number of kills to 129, the same as using it along with a stone sword. Whilst less efficient, using a bow with the diamond sword doubles its number of kills to a massive 1024.</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><b>The "machine bow"</b></div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The bow can fire as quickly as you can smash your right mouse button, using the bow as a "machine bow" involves pointing in the general direction of the monster/s and tapping as quickly as you can. Although most of the arrows will bounce off the mobs as they cannot take more than a certain amount of damage in a certain time, you can pick up afterwards the arrows that didn't make it into the monsters. If you are too close to what your shooting at, the arrows may bounce back and hit you. This technique requires that you are holding a large amount of arrows (I recommend at least one stack of 64). Because of the huge amount of arrows you are firing, you are bound to lose quite a lot, so this way of using the bow is only possible if you very rarely go after monsters or have a mob "farm" or large trap. A backup sword is recommended whilst using the bow in this way in case monsters are too close or you run out of arrows.</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><b>Conclusion</b></div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">There are lots of different viable ways of using the bow, all of them having their advantages and disadvantages.<b> </b>Trying them out is the best way to determine which one suits you best. Also, do not use the bow alongside the wooden sword or tools because they do around the same damage of just one arrow. Those items can however be used as back up weapons.</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

<b>*Update!* - As of the beta 1.2 update, stone and iron weapons and tools last twice as long! I will update this post when I upgrade my computer and can take a better quality video.</b><br />
<br />
Part 1 of this guide covers strategies and items used to kill <a href="http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Mobs">Aggressive mobs </a>whilst up close. (Not including creatures from the Nether)Whilst playing Survival Single Player on Normal difficulty.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><b>The basics</b></span><br />
Monsters in Minecraft can be a nuisance, a tool for getting loot, or can be killed for fun*<br />
<br />
*Killing for fun is not a good enough reason to kill any of your pets, siblings or associates in the real world.<br />
<br />
Monsters all have 10hp (hit points) each, and objects which are not <i>weapons</i> <i>or tools</i> only do 0.5 damage. It is not a good idea to take on monsters, or even go outside during the night with only your fists as defense. Swords allow you to dispatch monsters quickly, and are nearly essential for survival. <br />
<br />
<b>Detailed Comparison </b><br />
This video and table shows attributes of the most commonly used close combat weapons in Minecraft. Other tools are not included because they do not kill monsters efficiently. Look at the table <a href="http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Swords">here</a> if you want information about other tools. The "Stone/Iron Sword" values are for 4 stone and 1 iron sword.<br />

<br />
<b>Wooden Sword</b><br />
I do not recommend the wooden sword for killing Monsters, whatsoever. A good tactic to use when equipped with it is to RUN FOR THE HILLS. On a more sensible note, you can easily skip the 'wooden' tech level sword and go straight to stone. The wooden sword, however, is 4 times better at killing monsters than your hands, so it is better than nothing.<br />
<br />
<b>Stone Sword</b><br />
The stone sword is okay at killing monsters, but in my opinion it is not good enough to go out at night and expect to survive long. A good use for the stone sword is just to clear spiders and creepers away from you settlement in the morning. The stone sword has the advantage of being able to kill pigs and cows just as quickly as the Iron sword. Another good point about this sword is how "cheap" it is to produce.<br />
<br />
<b>Iron Sword</b><br />
The<b> </b>iron sword is good enough to let you stay out all night safely if you are good with using it*. The iron sword is relatively costly to produce if you use a lot of iron for minecarts etc. An advantage of the iron sword is how good it is with the bow, although that will be saved for the next guide.<br />
<br />
<b>Stone/Iron Swords</b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>A combination of stone and iron swords will allow your iron sword to last up to 3 times longer, whilst still maintaining the same number of hits to kills ratio. 2 hits with the stone sword, and 1 with the iron are needed to kill a monster. This technique needs 4 stone swords for every iron, but because stone is so abundant, this should not a be a problem.<br />
<br />
<b>Diamond Sword</b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8JMwcTyUFYfRJYUfYGck8iEZsYTFhRcKMJflyRijZ8DZaTODzPpxGYBY-1zECuda_a3KzYpB6Y4UZbvcS2o04N_81HvDm_kYXLpR-mnOp2yVI2WEdPj59bUz948raeswlhAXkbnv4htiQ/s1600/kills+per+item+comparison.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="261" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8JMwcTyUFYfRJYUfYGck8iEZsYTFhRcKMJflyRijZ8DZaTODzPpxGYBY-1zECuda_a3KzYpB6Y4UZbvcS2o04N_81HvDm_kYXLpR-mnOp2yVI2WEdPj59bUz948raeswlhAXkbnv4htiQ/s320/kills+per+item+comparison.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>The diamond sword is the fastest way to kill a monster by hand in Minecraft (Not including pushing them off cliffs). The chart to the right shows <strike>how awesome</strike> how many kills you can get with the Diamond sword compared to the other weapons. The diamond sword is cheaper than other diamond tools at 2 instead of 3 diamonds, but it is still very costly to craft unless you have a good mine system.<br />
<br />
<b>Iron Axe</b><br />
If you need wood**, have only found 3 iron, and don't have much stone, then you might want to make an iron axe for hitting badies with. The Iron axe however, is only as durable as the stone sword at killing monsters, so I only recommend it as a backup weapon or if you cannot get stone for some reason***.<br />
<br />
<b>Diamond Axe or Pickaxe</b><br />
Again, these alternatives to a sword only do as much damage as the stone sword, but they last much longer.<b> </b>If you are low on iron and diamonds, and are concerned about the stone swords low durability, consider using one of these as a temporary close combat weapon.<br />
<br />
*I take no responsibility for people being eaten by zombies, blown up by creepers, or anything else bad happening to them.<br />
**I <i>haven't </i>got wood.<br />
***I've got 4 double chests of stone, even though I built a huge castle.I don't know how you could have a shortage.<br />
<br />
<b>Conclusion</b><br />
The diamond sword is the one you really want. If you cannot get it, the stone/iron combo is very efficient if you can cope with switching weapons quickly. If monster combat is not what floats your boat(or boosts your minecart?), and/or you have resource complications, consider using the iron axe or diamond pickaxe/axe as weapons.<br />
<br />

The bow, and bow/sword tactics<br />
